crown lengthening
Sometimes, a patient won’t have a sufficient amount of tooth structure that goes past the gumline. In these cases, we can perform a procedure called crown lengthening, which allows us to lower the bone to expose the tooth structure.
who's a good candidate for crown lengthening?
Crown lengthening is most frequently performed for one of the two following reasons:
The patient has severe tooth decay below the gumline. This decay needs to be exposed before it can be treated.
The patient does not have sufficient healthy tooth for a crown or other dental appliance to attach to.
If we believe crown lengthening may be the right treatment for you, we will perform an examination and sit down with you to explain your options.
what to expect from this procedure
Crown lengthening does not usually take more than an hour. It’s a common outpatient procedure, which means there’s little reason for patients to worry.
While it can take 2-3 months for the area to fully heal, you will typically need no more than 1-3 days of rest. If you are concerned by recovery time, please let us know and we can provide a timeline specific to your case.
Once the procedure is complete, it is much easier for a dental restoration to be placed on your tooth.
